![]() If you do a test and can tell the difference between high quality lossy (eg AAC 256) and Apple Lossless, there's one more option - you can rip to AAC320kbps using XLD (and probably others). Lossy - much better use of disk space, easier on the batteries, can sound great if you rip at a high rate and listen through regular computer speakers (you probably won't be able to spot the difference). Lossless - best possible quality sound but you'll probably only be able to tell the difference if you've got good speakers and hifi components (no audible difference from a high-quality lossy file if you're listening on your iPod sitting on the bus!) but higher battery drain and uses way more disk space. The advantages and disadvantages look like this: Usually commercial software or games are produced for sale or to serve a commercial purpose. One thing that hasn't been mentioned so far is that if you rip to lossless, you can expect higher battery drain on your iPod (if you use one) since you'll be asking it to do a lot more decoding than if it were playing a lossy MP3 or AAC. :) Anyone using the LAME encoder with itunes I've had a tough time getting it to work. Getting used to the OS is challenging but I'm learning. I've been a PC user for a very long time. ![]() Even though, most trial software products are only time-limited some also have feature limitations. I just got my first apple computer since the apple IIe. After that trial period (usually 15 to 90 days) the user can decide whether to buy the software or not. Trial software allows the user to evaluate the software for a limited amount of time. Demos are usually not time-limited (like Trial software) but the functionality is limited. In some cases, all the functionality is disabled until the license is purchased. ![]() Demoĭemo programs have a limited functionality for free, but charge for an advanced set of features or for the removal of advertisements from the program's interfaces. At higher bitrates (192+ kbit/s) you are not going to hear any difference at all so you can use Apple Music App if it makes job easier for you. They were more focused on their AAC encoder, that's why we recommend LAME. The same thing cannot be said about Apple's encoder. In some cases, ads may be show to the users. LAME has been tested and perfected over the years. Basically, a product is offered Free to Play (Freemium) and the user can decide if he wants to pay the money (Premium) for additional features, services, virtual or physical goods that expand the functionality of the game.
